About
Château de Lagarde is the largest château in Ariège, and is best known romantically as the "Versailles of the Pyrenees" due to its sheer size and 15 hectares of formal gardens.
Originally a medieval castle, it was built on a hill in the first half of the 14th century by François de Lévis, Lord of Montségur. Abandoned after the First Empire, it was pillaged and the stone sold.
